Franklin Ready to Bowl over Competition

By: Ben Rosenbaum ’09

With the first practice scheduled for December 17, Franklin’s allied bowling coach

Charles Mallonee is gearing up for a groundbreaking season.  Coach Mallonee is looking to

bring attention to the program in order to offer another way for students to participate in Franklin

athletics.

Coach Mallonne credits the interest in the team this year to the successful advertising

that was done by Mr. Spears and the morning announcements crew.  Getting the word out about

the team is a crucial part when forming an allied team.

“The first year is so important,” said Mallonee. “It is important to get the ball

rolling, so to speak.  Getting the team established and being able to field the team is our priority

this year.”

Mallonee was very pleased with the number of kids that showed up to the

introductory meeting

“The kids are going to be able to gain a sense of camaraderie among their teammates.

Being able to not have to cut kids is great because you get to mold the team into what you want

it to be.” said Mallonee.  About 23 students showed up for the first meeting.

Mallonee’s interest in bowling started at a young age when he attended

multiple bowling parties.  He then took a class at College of Wooster, Ohio, where he was

formally taught the sport.  He hopes to pass on what he learned to Franklin’s team.

The allied sports program offers a chance for students who have never participated on a

junior varsity or varsity team to play a sport representing their school.

The Bowling team will compete and practice at AMF Kings Bowling on Deer Park

Road.  Franklin will have about six games in the season, depending on how many other schools

field teams.
